Richard and wife

Oscar nominated filmmaker, Lee Daniels is out and The Weinstein Co., is in search of a new director for their long awaited Richard Pryor Biopic. According to sources, “The Weinstein Co., which is behind the film (it also released The Butler), is said to have declined to wait further for Daniels’ schedule to clear up. He is an executive producer of Fox’s smash television drama Empire, and he has another project at the network, Star, that is requiring a significant time commitment.”

The Weinstein Co., begin their search for a new director last weekend. Now that Lee Daniels is out as director, what does that mean for the current cast – Mike Epps as Richard Pryor and Oprah Winfrey as his grandmother? Oprah maybe safe but does Mike Epps have enough star power to retain his role? With a new director on board –Epps maybe replace, not having the opportunity to showcase his range like he was able to do in Sparkle.   At times, directors may bring their own cast to the table including their revision of the script.

The script is written by Bill Condon based on Richard Pryor: Is it Something I said?. The biopic explores Pryor life during the 1970s before the success of his career in film and television leading to his death from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2005.

The film was supposed to begin shooting in March 2014.  Two years later, Daniels is busier than ever now with a successful television show currently airing and another on the way with award-winning Queen Latifah.

The Weinstein Co., is determined to get their film made including Pryor’s wife, Jennifer Lee serving as executive producer/producer to the film but who will they get to replace Daniels? What are your suggestions? Who’s your top 5 direct to replace Lee Daniels?
