Afeni Shakur Davis, activist, philanthropist, former Black Panther member and the mother who gave birth to the late renowned Hip-Hop artist, Tupac Shakur, has passed in Sausalito, California. She was 69.
According to The Daily News, Marin County deputies responded to Shakur’s home in Sausalito, Calif., Monday night after she suffered a possible cardiac arrest, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday morning. She was taken to a local hospital and died just before 10:30 p.m.
She was the subject of Tupac’s classic 1995 hit “Dear Mama.” She also appeared in the music video. (see below)
Ironically, the long awaited, Tupac’s biopic, All Eyes on Me, overseen by Afeni has just wrapped. This year also marks the 20 year Anniversary of the fatal day Tupac at the age of 25 year old succumbed to his injuries after six days of being in the hospital. He was shot on Sept, 1996 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The shooter was never caught.
In honor of her son’s legacy, Davis founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation shortly after his death. She also was involved with Broadway musical Holler If Ya hear Me in 2014 and gave permission for Tupac’s music to be used in the musical. Davis also founded and served as CEO of Amaru Entertainment, Inc., a record and film production company Atlanta, Georgia.
According to IMDB, All Eyes on Me is to be released November 11, 2016.
