The Working Actor W/ Malik Yoba

(New York) – Independent Film New York (IFNY) Monologue Competition is back, this time with a new name, new sponsor and award ceremony! The monologue competition co-founded by Attika Torrence and Malik Yoba re-brands to “The Working Actor with Malik Yoba Monologue Competition“. The competition will take place today, June 27, 2013 at The Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, 1 University Plaza Brooklyn, NY. The festivities begin with a complimentary cocktail reception from 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM, doors open 7:15 PM and ShowTime at 7:30 PM Sharp. Tickets are available for purchase at www.kumbletheater.org. The event is sponsored by NBC Universal and hosted by Malik Yoba, best know for 90’s classic television series, “New York Undercover” and Tyler Perry’s films, “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?”

This year IFNY will also recognize the works and the commitment of artists in the community with their first ever IFNY RISING STAR AWARD.  Recipients for this award are:  Michael “BoogieVision” Pinckney – Filmmaker and Robbie Morgan – Actor.

This year esteemed judges are:

Ms. Merkerson has won critical acclaim for her work in theater, television and film. She is best known for her portrayal of Lieutenant Anita Van Buren on NBC’s LAW and ORDER (2006, 2010, 2011 Image Award). Her credits include the HBO film LACKAWANNA BLUES (Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, Gracie Allen, 2006 Image Award and an IFP Spirit Award nomination).

Other film credits include; Lincoln, Black Snake Moan, Terminator II: Judgment Day and several others….

Actress and comedian Cassandra Freeman, best known for her starring roles as Denzel Washington’s love interest in Spike Lee’s Inside Man and in Chris Rock’s I think I Love My Wife, she also was in the 2011 Audience Award Sundance Film Festival winning movie Kinyarwanda, she has also performed Off Broadway in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars directed by Ruben Santiago–Hudson the creator of the HBO movie hit Lackawanna Blues, and performed in the world wide phenomenal play “Vagina Monologues” along side Jane Fonda and Rosie Perez.

Ms. Freeman has appeared in several TV shows including Shark, Numbers, The Good Wife and her reoccurring role in Queen Latifah’s hit VH1 show Single Ladies.

Former theater director & playwright, has been casting out of New York & LA for the past 12yrs. Before joining NBC’s primetime casting department, she worked with networks including HBO, AMC, ABC, CBS, Starz, SpikeTV, & MTV as well as films with feature studios including Paramount, Universal, New Line Cinema, Working Title, Warner Brothers, Screen Gems, and Disney.

Jandiz was recently voted BackStage Magazine’s Actor’s Choice Award for AUDITION COACH OF THE YEAR. She is a proud member of CSA, and the casting directors union and several non-profit theater organizations.
