Ryan Coogler, director of ‘FRUITVALE STATION‘ receives the Avenir Prize at Cannes 2013

New York – (cinematiqmag.com) Ryan Coogler, director of ‘Fruitvale Station’ receives Avenir Prize – Un Certain Regard at the 2013 Cannes film festival.  The Weinstein Company‘s Harvey Weinstein on Fruitvale Station winning the Avenir Prize writes via Facebook: “Our huge congratulations go to Ryan Coogler and his talented cast on receiving such a prestigious honor out in Cannes.  This is a film we are proud to be a part of and we’re glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves.”  The San Francisco Film Society (@SF_FilmSociety) tweets, “we know Ryan’s talent will continue to elevate future for #BayArea filmmaking!”

The film based on a true story of 22 year-old Oakland California resident, Oscar Grant chronicle the last few hours of his life.  2008 is ending, Oscar begin to get a head start on his new year resolution by amending relationships being a better son to his mother, partner to his girlfriend and father to his daughter.  However, as the night unfolds, it is clear that Oscar new way of life and thinking put to a test as he faces crossroads with family, friends, and strangers, each revealing who is Oscar Grant, ends deadly with the police.  The act of violence captured and went viral via the Internet for the world to see in plan sight of the fatal act that took place at the Fruitvale BART in the bay area of California.  A community outcry manifested that would not only shake the city but the nation.

Ryan Coogler’s ‘Fruitvale Station’ stars Michael B. Jordan (Oscar Grant), Melonie Diaz (Sophina) and Academy Award winner, Octavia Spencer (Wanda) and produced by Forest Whitaker.

Earlier this year, Ryan Coogler picked up two awards at Sundance 2013: Sundance Film Festival U.S. Grand Jury Award and the Sundance Film Festival U.S. Audience Award.

Weinstein acquires the film and set to release in theaters July 26, 2013CINEMATIQ magazine extends congratulation to Ryan Coogler and award-winning cast and crew.
